Snowdrift and bad weather conditions create massive traffic jam on Ring Road 1 4011

Heavy snowfall and strong winds caused a massive traffic jam on Suðurlandsvegur road this morning. There is limited visibility on Kjalarnes road and poor travel conditions due to snowdrift.

The Metropolitan police urge parents not to pick their children up from school early as the storm will subside after noon.

According to the National Broadcasting Service, wind gusts exceeded 40 metres per second (89 mph/144 km per hour) at Hvammur under the Eyjafjöll mountain range in south Iceland.

Heavy snowfall and precipitation will continue in most parts of the country until morrow morning. According to the IMO, gale force winds will pick up in the northeastern regions tomorrow, declining later in the afternoon.
