The former CIA employee who leaked large quantities of classified data on US spying operations in 2013 addressed the party convention of the Icelandic Pirate Party which was held over the weekend. Snowden, who is currently in hiding in Russia, addressed the convention via video link.
Snowden's address, which was cheered by attendees at the convention, focused on the dangers of public policy being set based on fear. The Icelandic Pirate Party, which has run as an anti-establishment and anti-corruption party has maintained strong ties to international privacy advocates and internet freedom activists.
The Pirate Party has on several occasions urged Icelandic authorities to offer Snowden asylum in Iceland. In 2013 members of the two left wing parties, as well as the Pirate Party, submitted a bill in parliament to grant Snowden political asylum in Iceland. The bill never made it to a floor vote.
