Despite strong winds before noon today and yesterday evening and afternoon, South and South-West Iceland avoided the wrath of the first winter storm of the season. North Iceland and the Central Highlands have not been as fortunate. The Meteorological Office expects snow and sleet, with gale force winds in the Westfjords and the North, as well as East Iceland today and tomorrow morning. Driving conditions on mountain roads can become very difficult. With falling temperatures the precipitation closer to the coast and at lower altitudes can turn into sleet and snowfall.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority warns drivers to expect icy and slick patches on heaths. The Ring Road across Holtavörðuheiði heath, which separates West and North Iceland has slick patches. The IRCA is also warning that temperatures could drop below zero in North Iceland on Saturday, creating dangerously icy conditions on roads: Slow down and drive carefully!

Travelers are urged to keep up to date with weather alerts and the forecast on vedur.is, any travel warnings at safetravel.is and road conditions on the website of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority.
