Mountain road 570, Jökulshálsvegur road, is now open for suitable traffic. It’s one of Iceland's last mountain roads to open this summer.
Road 570 goes across Snæfellsnes peninsula, which lies between Faxaflói bay and Breiðafjörður fjord in in West Iceland. It is only passable by 4×4 mountain trucks and is closed to passenger cars.
Employees at The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (IRCA), have been hard at work over the past week clearing the road of snow. A huge 5 metre (16.5 feet) high snow wall lines part of the road and is unlikely to disappear this summer. The pictures above were taken by Vegagerðin employee Guðmundur H. Björnsson.
Most mountain roads in Iceland remain closed for summer traffic until early July because of bad conditions.
As we we at Iceland Insider have said before we want to urge all travellers to respect road-signs, heed the travel limitations imposed by the Road administration and above all: use common sense and not attempt to drive on mountain roads in passenger cars! Roads are closed or only open to 4×4‘s for a reason.
