Mountain road 570, Jökulshálsvegur road, is now open for suitable traffic. It’s one of Iceland's last mountain roads to open this summer.

Road 570 goes across Snæfellsnes peninsula, which lies between Faxaflói bay and Breiðafjörður fjord in in West Iceland. It is only passable by 4×4 mountain trucks and is closed to passenger cars.

A huge 5 metre (16.5 feet) high snow wall lines part of the road and is unlikely to disappear this summer. The pictures above were taken by Vegagerðin employee Guðmundur H. Björnsson.

Roads are closed or only open to 4×4‘s for a reason.
