Skjálfandafljótsbrú bridge (Road 85) will face extensive closures until 22 July due to repairs. Road 85 is the main route between the towns of Akureyri and Húsavík in North Iceland.
According to the National Broadcasting Service, the first closure is Monday, 27 June, at 3 pm until 1 am. The bridge will close every Monday between 3 pm and 1 am, and between 1 pm to 1 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Those who intend to drive to Húsavík at those times will have to take the Fljótsdalsheiði route through Aðaldalur valley. The alternative route is 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) longer.
The Skjálfandafljótsbrú bridge was constructed in 1935 and is not well equipped to handle the increased traffic. The repairs include strengthening the bridge’s foundations and surface.
