A coast guard helicopter had to transport two American travellers to hospital after a RV which they were driving was blown off the road by Króksfjarðarnes village in the southern Westfjords, on the coast of Breiðafjörður bay. Six travellers were in the RV.

Injured travellers evacuated by helicopter
When police and an ambulance arrived at the scene with a doctor a decision was made to call in the Coast Guard helicopter to move two of the injured travellers to the National University Hospital in Reykjavík.

The vehicle blew off the road two kilometres (1.4 miles) west of Króksfjarðarnes. According the local newspaper Morgunblaðið the car was “blown to smithereens” as the storm blew it off the road. Members of the local Reykhólar search and rescue team were dispatched to clean up the wreckage which had spread over a sizable area.

Not the first RV to be destroyed by the wind
Several RVs have been destroyed or badly damaged as they have been blown off the road in storms in Western Iceland during September. In most cases the travellers have been foreign visitors. It is crucial that people traveling in RVs or with caravans heed storm warnings and don’t drive in areas where strong winds are expected. The winds in South and West Iceland, as well as the Snæfellsnes peninsula can get intense and can easily sweep RVs off the road.
