The number of people who receive financial assistance from the Reykjavík municipality has dropped from the 2013 high of 3,350 individuals to 2,259 individuals. The number has not been this low since 2009 when the recession which followed the 2008 financial crash hit Iceland with full force.

Last minute assistance
Icelandic municipalities are bound by law to provide financial assistance to individuals and families who earn less than a minimum figure determined by the Ministry of Welfare. The assistance is intended as a last resort for people who have exhausted all other avenues, including their right to unemployment benefits or Social Security payments. The demand for this last resort assistance spiked after the 2008 financial crash.

In 2008 1,876 people received financial assistance from the municipality. The figure increased each year until 2013, but has been dropping slowly since then. The local news site Kjarninn reports that the number of families with children who receive last resort assistance has also dropped to its lowest level since 2012. In 2016 564 families with 913 children received financial assistance from the municipality, compared to 895 families with 1,334 children in 2012.
