The Icelandic Meteorological Office reports that the epicenter of the activity has been just below the surface in the north-east part of the Katla caldera. The quakes, including the 3.2 quake detected at 18:30 on Sunday evening, were detected at a dept of only 100 m (330 ft).
Katla, which is located beneath Mýrdalsjökull glacier in South Iceland has been showing growing signs of activity in the past year. The volcano is under close supervision, as the volcano has erupted very regularly every 60-80 years. The last eruption took place in 1918, making Katla long overdue for an eruption.
