Several strong tremors were detected in Bárðarbunga caldera yesterday afternoon. The largest, a 3.1 magnitude quake was detected 6.7 km (4.2 miles) east-northeast of the center of the caldera at 17:48. Three other significant quakes, 2.3-3.0 magnitude, were then detected in succession, each closer to the caldera center.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office reports that the earthquake swarm, which continued until 20:22 counted a dozen quakes. Yesterday's quakes were all at a relatively, the first at a depth of 3.1 km (1.9 miles), the last at a depth of 9.7 km (6 miles).

The Bárðarbunga system has been very active in the past few months, with several relatively large quakes being registered in the caldera and significant activity in the northern part of the system, including a powerful earthquake swarm south of Herðubreið mountain at the northern edge of the system over the past weekend.
