A strong gale is expected in the Westfjords today, with winds reaching more than 20 metres per second (45 mph – 72 km/hour). Travel conditions in the area are very poor and police advice drivers not to be on the roads. Winds are expected to decrease by tomorrow, Friday.

The road across Súðarvíkurhlíð, Westfjords, was closed to traffic yesterday evening due to avalanche danger. The road will remain closed until later today. The roads linking Ísafjörður, Flateyri and Suðureyri are also closed until further notice.

Avalanche danger was declared yesterday in the southern part of the Westfjords by Iceland‘s Civil Protection institute after a 100 metre-wide  avalanche hit the village of Patreksfjörður. Homes in Patreksfjörður and the neighbouring village of Tálknafjörður were evacuated.

According to the IMO avalanche danger in residential areas in the northern part of Westfjords is still considered low but the situation is being monitored. Some avalanches were reported in the southern part of Westfjords and also small avalanches in Bláfjöll, located just outside the capital area.
