Several roads, parts of Ring Road likely closed down tonight 7606

Due to the severe storm which is headed for Iceland the Road and Coastal Authority has announced it will likely close down several roads in South-West and West Iceland tonight. People should adjust their travel plans accordingly and avoid any travel after tonight.

The IRCA expects that the Ring Road over Hellisheiði heath, which separates the Capital Region and South Iceland, as well as the alternate route through Þrengslin will be closed to all traffic at 20:00 (8 pm). Mosfellsheiði and Lyngdalsheiði heaths, which separate Þingvellir National Park from West Iceland and South Iceland are also expected to be closed to traffic at 20:00. 

The roads are expected to remain closed until sometime early morning.

Expected rapidly increasing wind by evening around 20-21. Snow blizzard at mountain roads storm and very poor visibility. Mainly W and SW parts of Iceland, but tomorrow morning generally in Iceland.  Rain in lowlands.

Travellers are asked to respect the road closings. Both the Icelandic Meteorological Office and ICE-SAR have asked people to cancel all travel plans tonight.
