A dozen travellers are staying at Skaftárskáli road stop restaurant and convenience store in the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur, at the western edge of the closed area and 50-60 people are waiting at Þórbergssetur museum at its eastern edge, east of Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RÚV reports the travellers are waiting for the Ring Road to be re-opened so that they can continue on their way.
A number of beautiful sights around Kirkjubæjarklaustur, including the Systrafoss waterfall, make the place an ideal place to spend some hours stranded.
Madness to travel in the weather
The manager of Skaftárskáli told RÚV that there are many more travellers in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, passing the time by exploring the area around the village. A farmer at the homestead Hali, near Þórbergssetur museum told RÚV that the weather has been growing increasingly hostile during the morning, and that heavy rain has now been added to the raging storm. People understand it would be madness to try to travel in this weather.
