Seismic activity in Bárðarbunga caldera continues to be strong: 60 earthquakes since Friday 1555

The Scientific Advisory Board of the Icelandic Civil Protection (SAB) published a new status report today. No scientists are working on site of the eruption due to bad weather in the central highlands.

SAB reports that seismic activity in Bárðarbunga continues to be strong. The strongest earthquake, since the last meeting of the Advisory Board Friday 6th, struck last night at 03.18 and was of magnitude M4.7. Two other earthquakes stronger than M4 were detected since Friday.

In total around 60 earthquakes have been detected around the big sub-glacial caldera since last Friday. No earthquake over M5 has been has hit at Bárðarbunga since January 8th.

The ongoing Holuhraun eruption is in an ice free zone in the central highlands, about 41 km (25 mi) north of Bárðarbunga.
