The Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (Landsbjörg) has co-ordinated an extensive search operation which involves helicopters and bomb squads from the Coastguard and 200 specialised searchers from local rescue units. This is one of the largest rescue missions conducted in the country in years.

Conditions in the area make rescue difficult as searcher must dig their way through snow cornices up to 20-metres-thick (65 ft) to reach the river and its banks.
