On Sunday members of the search and rescue teams Kjölur and Kyndill in the Capital Region were dispatched to a drainage ditch by the foot of the mountain Esja.
The horse had fallen into the ditch, where he had gotten stuck in thick mud. According to the local news site visir.is the horse was exhausted when the rescue teams arrived and it was feared it might drown in the ditch.
Usually search and rescue teams are not called in to rescue animals from ditches, but in this case it was believed their expertise might prove helpful. The teams managed to get ropes around the animal which was then hoisted up by a tractor excavator. According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service the horse regained its strength quickly. After it had been cared for, dried and warmed under blankets it seemed to be ok.
