Search and Rescue teams from South Iceland, including the villages of Vík and Hvolsvöllur were dispatched to Sólheimajökull glacier yesterday evening to rescue a group of eight hikers who had gotten lost on the glacier. Sólheimajökull is a popular hiking destination among travellers, both domestic and foreign.
According to an announcement from Landsbjörg, The Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue, the group had stayed for too long on the glacier and had lost its bearings and could not find the way back down from the glacier. The Search and Rescue teams drove to the edge of the glacier icefall, from where they would proceed on foot to meet the hikers, escorting them down to safety.
