Members of the Search and Rescue unit Ok in East Iceland received a distress call yesterday evening, asking for help in getting two foreign travelers who were stuck on the Kaldidalur mountain road. The road is impassable due to heavy snow and difficult conditions.

According to the local newspaper Morgunblaðið the two men, who were driving an SUV, had gotten stuck in snow, but were otherwise ok. The road, which runs to the north from Þingvellir national park to Borgarfjörður in East Iceland. The route crosses Kaldidalur valley, a barren highland desert between the mountain Ok to the West and Þórisjökull and Langjökull glaciers to the East.
While Kaldidalur is not an F-road and is accessible even to regular passenger cars during the summer, the winter and early spring are a different matter. The road is still impassable due to heavy snow and difficult conditions, as is shown on the website of the Iceland Coastal and Road Authority.
