After being hit with rough weather and storm on their way from Iceland to Norway two US warships, the USS New York and the USS Gunston Hall, returned to harbor in Reykjavík. The ships had been in Iceland to participate in NATO military exercises over the weekend, but set sail to Norway on Monday.
The USS New York is a amphibious transport dock and the USS Gunston Hall a dock landing ship. Both ships are equipped to transport and launch landing craft and amphibious vehicles.
One of the two ships sustained some minor damage in the storm, while several sailors were injured. None of the injuries are considered serious, according to the Defense Office of the Icelandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The local news site Vísir reports that twelve sailors were injured in the storm. Some of the sailors were taken to the emergency room at the National University Hospital in Reykjavík, where they received a full check-up and were treated for the injuries.
The ships were still in harbor earlier today, Wednesday. It is not clear when they will set sail again.
