Lyngdalsheiði, Hellisheiði and Þrengslin mountain roads were closed yesterday due to severe weather. Lyndgaldsheiði, Southwest Iceland, remains closed to traffic.
Search and Rescue teams in South Iceland and the police worked all through the night assisting motorists who were left stranded on heaths and mountain roads following yesterday‘s storm.
Road conditions all over the country are rather poor due to snow and ice. The roads across Brattabrekka and Fróðárheiði, West Iceland, are closed to traffic. All major roads in the Westfjords are currently impassable.
Teams from the Road Administration are currently working to clear roads of snow.
The weather forecast for the weekend is somewhat agreeable. Some snowfall is expected in the northern regions tomorrow, while other parts of the country will remain dry during the day. It will begin to snow in the Westfjords and in the southeast later in the evening. Temperatures will remain low, with maximum temperatures reaching -1 degrees Celsius (30 Fahrenheit).
On Sunday the weather will remain mostly fair in the south and southeast parts of the country, although the Westman Islands will see some rain and sleet. Snow is expected in other regions. Temperatures ranging between 2 to -8 degrees Celsius (35-17 Fahrenheit).
