Road Administration receives large number of complaints due to poor gravel roads 1727

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration has received a large number of complaints regarding the poor conditions of the country‘s numerous gravel roads. According to the National Broadcasting Service, funds for maintaining the roads have been insufficient for some years.

The majority of Icelandic country roads are gravel roads that require more frequent maintenance than paved roads, especially after snowy winters. Hreinn Haraldsson, head of IRCA, says the condition of the roads has deteriorated further due to increased traffic and fears that they will soon become dangerous.

“Allowing them to deteriorate to this extent is more costly than maintaining them. These roads can badly damage vehicles and are dangerous to navigate,” he said.
