The winter storms just keep coming it seems, bringing with them difficult driving conditions. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority has closed the Ring Road over Holtavörðuheiði heath, which separates West and North Iceland due to blowing snow and zero visibility on the heath. The road is expected to remain closed until the weather improves. The blizzard is expected to continue until noon.

The IRCA also closed the Ring Road between North-East and East Iceland over Mývatns- og Möðrudalsöræfi highland plateau over night, but the plateau has now been opened to traffic. It is not unusual for the two stretches of the Ring Road to be closed when winter storms pass over the northern part of the island.
Drivers are advised that all roads in the northwestern part of Iceland are covered with snow, hiding ice and icy patches. The Ring road and most other roads in the South West and South are similarly covered in snow with ice and icy patches: Slow down!
Weather will improve by noon – no travel weather over the weekend
Blizzard and blowing snow reduce visibility on the Ring Road west of the village Vík in South Iceland, all along the South Coast, in West Iceland, the Westfjords and North West Iceland. The IRCA and the Meteorological office expect the weather and driving conditions to improve by noon, and remain good for the remainder of the day. However, the IMO warns that a second storm front is heading to Iceland, making landfall on Saturday. The weekend will not bring any travel weather the IRCA warns. People should keep up to date on road conditions and the weather forecast and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
Winter travellers in Iceland are urged to pay close attention to the weather forecast, all weather alerts and road conditions as well as travel alerts from ICE -SAR before embarking on any travel outside urban areas.
