Ring Road open in S. Iceland after fatal car crash in dangerously icy conditions 7032

A young man died in a head on collision of two vehicles on the Ring Road east of the town of Selfoss early morning. The road was closed while police and first responders were working at the site of the accident. Two people were in the car. Both live in Iceland. The driver of the other car did not suffer serious injuries.

The road has been re-opened. Conditions in the area are extremely challenging due to ice. A Yellow Weather Alert has been issued for South Iceland today afternoon: Drivers are asked to show extra caution.

The accident took place at 7:40 in the morning, near the farm of Bitra. Two cars, who were coming from opposite directions, crashed into one another. According to the Police in South Iceland it seems likely the driver of one of the cars have lost control of the vehicle due to ice on the road. 

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority warns drivers to show caution on the Ring Road east of Selfoss in South Iceland as the road is covered in ice and icy patches. Roads leading off the Ring Road are extremely slippery or hazardous due to snow or ice.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a Yellow Weather Alert for South Iceland, effective today from 16:30 until 21:00 tonight, asking travellers to be cautious. Powerful windgusts can easily cause drivers to lose control of vehicles, especially in icy conditions.
