The Ring Road between Kirkjubæjarklaustur village and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in South East Iceland will be closed tonight from 18:00 (6 pm) until 15:00 tomorrow afternoon, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority has warned. The closing of the road is to protect travelers from a storm which is expected to peak overnight.
People should avoid ALL travel in South East Iceland, including the area around the village Vík in the South.

A violent storm with sustained windspeed expected to reach 30 m/s (67 mph), and localized winds and windgusts reaching 55 m/s (123 mph). Wind of this magnitude should be taken seriously, and people should stay off the road, as the wind can easily blow vehicles off the road. Sustained windspeeds in excess of 110 mph are categorized as a Category 3 hurricane.
The IRCA has said that roadblocks would be put up at 18:00. The weather is not expected to calm down until tomorrow afternoon: An Orange Weather Alert is in effect for SE Iceland until 12:00 noon tomorrow, although an Orange alert will remain in effect for the area until midnight tomorrow.
People are asked to RESPECT THE ROAD CLOSING. The conditions on the glacial outwash plains of South Iceland, and in the Öræfi district in storms like the one passing over today pose severe risk to travelers. In addition to risk to life and limbs the storm can cause serious damage to vehicles. The wind, as well as blowing rocks and debris can break car windows, blowing sand and debris can damage the paint coat. STAY OFF THE ROAD.
