The Ring Road between the bridge over Markarfljót river and the village of Vík í Mýrdal will be closed at 14:00 today. Previously the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration closed the road between Kirkjubæjarklaustur village and Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. Wind speed in individual gusts has consistently reached hurricane force, exceeding 35 m/s (78 mph).

Hurricane force windgusts
Steingrímsfjarðarheiði heath, which connects W. Iceland and the Westfjords, has also been closed due to the storm. Individual wind gusts in the Westfjords have reached 50 m/s (112 mph), equal to the power of a category three hurricane.

Driving under such conditions is dangerous, as it the wind can cause drivers to lose control of the vehicle. Cars can also be blown off the road. In South Iceland the wind poses a different problem, as the wind blows up sand and even gravel small rocks which can damage cars.
Storm to continue in S. Iceland until Friday
The storm is expected to continue for the remainder of the day, slowing down by tomorrow in West and East Iceland. The Icelandic Meteorological Office expects the storm will continue in South Iceland until Friday.
