Ring Road east of Mývatn lake in NE Iceland closed due to accident caused by winter storm 8469

The Ring Road was closed in Námaskarð pass east of Mývatn lake in North East Iceland around noon today. Two vehicles were involved in a accident earlier today. Snow and sleet, limited visibility, strong winds and slick roads in the area are believed to have contributed to the accident. A Yellow Weather Alert is in effect for the area: Travelers are advised to slow down and drive carefully due to winter driving conditions.

According to the local news site Vísir the Police in Northeast Iceland closed the road while the damaged vehicles were towed, the road ploughed and sanded to reduce danger of further accidents. Meanwhile the road was closed. A number of people are waiting in their vehicles on either side of the road closure, according to the Police. At 13:45 the road had been re-opened to traffic.

Drivers are asked to show caution when driving today: The Ring Road in NE Iceland is covered in snow or melting snow, creating slick patches and difficult driving conditions which can be dangerous to vehicles which have not been fitted with winter tires.
