The American entertainment magazine Variety reports that Ridley Scott and the Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur will be producing a TV series based on Eve Online, an Icelandic online role-playing game.

Baltasar Kormákur, whose most recent movie Everest, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley and Josh Brolin and is considered a strong contender for an Oscar nomination, bought the movie and TV rights to EVE Online two years ago. Now it seems that fans of the game need wait no longer for an announcement on the start of work on a movie set in the world of the massively multiplayer online game.  In 2014 Variety predicted that a EVE Online TV series could become “the next Game of Thrones.”

Eve-Online which was developed by the Icelandic software company CCP has a science fiction space theme is one of the largest online role-playing games in existence. The EVE Universe claims nearly 900,000 active players playing in both EVE Online and Dust 514, another game developed by CCP. The game takes place 23,000 years in the future, in a world with over 7,800 star systems.
A 2013 trailer for the game, “Origins” explains the back-story to the game.
