Reykjavík Residents are overwhelmingly positive toward foreign travelers, a new poll commissioned by the City of Reykjavík reveals. 74% of respondents say they are positive or very positive toward foreign travelers. Only 9% say they view foreign travelers negatively. This finding is in line with all other polls on the subject, including a recent poll of all Icelanders which showed that 9% of Icelanders hold a negative view of tourism.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the City of Reykjavík polls the residents of the Metropolitan area on their views of foreign travelers. The polls have shown a slight drop in positive attitudes since 2015 until now. The share of respondents who say they view tourism and foreign travelers positively registers a small increase over last year.
Reykjavíkians growing accustomed to tourism?
Other findings of the poll also suggest the residents of Reykjavík are either growing accustomed to the number of foreign travelers and the changes tourism has brought to the city. At the same time the dramatic growth in tourism in recent years has leveled off since last year.
However, while positive views have slipped slightly since 2015, negative views have not shown an increase, despite a dramatic increase in visitor numbers over the period. Instead, the number of people who view tourism neither positively nor negatively has increased.
One of the more interesting findings of the poll is that residents of City Center hold a significantly more positive view of tourism than residents of the suburbs. The poll found that 73% of the central neighborhoods, which have also been affected most by tourism, are positive toward foreign travelers, while the residents of the suburban municipality Mosfellsbær are significantly less positive, only 44% saying tourism is positive.
