The UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is today, 25th of November. It marks the beginning of a 16-day global campaign called ‘Orange the world: End violence against women and girls’, ending on Human Rights Day on 10 December. The aim is to raise awareness and take action against violence against women and girls.
Ljósagangan, the March of Light, beginning at the statue of Ingólfur Arnarson at 7pm, kicks off the campaign. Landmarks in and around Reykjavík will also be lit in orange to draw attention to the initiative.
According to UN‘s statistics, 35% of women and girls globally experience some form of physical and or sexual violence in their lifetime with up to seven in ten women facing this abuse in some countries.
