According to a new European study amphetamine use in Reykjavík is among the highest in major European cities which participated in the study. Only Antwerp in Belgium and two German cities, Duelmen and Dortmund had a higher amphetamine use. Using measurements of trace elements in wastewater The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction estimates that the daily use of amphetamine in Reykjavík is 123.1mg for every 1000 inhabitants. Other drugs appear far less common in Reykjavík.
The study shows distinct geographic patterns in drug use: Cities in Northern Europe record far higher rates of amphetamine use than those in the south, while cocaine appears far more common in Southern Europe than in the South. Methamphetamine, as opposed to amphetamine, appears far more common in East Europe than in the west.
