Restrictions on travel in the region of Askja lifted 1046

The District Commissioner of Police at Húsavík town north Iceland and directors of Vatnajökull National Park in cooperation with The National Commissioner of Police in Reykjavík have lifted restrictions on travel in the region of Askja in the central highlands north of Vatnajökull glacier.

According to the website of the Vatnajökull National Park the environmental changes in Askja after the rock slide of July 21st have shed a new light on inherent hazards to visitors in the area.

Travellers are advised to seek information from park rangers in Vatnajökull national Park before entering the Askja caldera.
