Residents of Ísafjörður, Westfjords, warned to keep inside yesterday due to high emissions of gas in the area 1778

Prevailing easterly winds have spread gas emissions from the Holuhraun eruption towards the western regions of the country over the past few days.
Yesterday evening gas emissions rose to 2o00µg/m3 in Ísafjörður, Westfjords, prompting the Environment Agency of Iceland to contact residents via text message telling them to keep inside with windows closed.

According to news website Vísir.is most residents were taken by surprise by the warning seeing as the village is one of the furthest away from the eruption site.

Gas emissions continue to be spread towards westernly regions of the country today (Thursday, October 16) and tomorrow (Friday, October 17). The Icelandic Met Office continues to monitor gas emissions in inhabited areas. 

Sulphur dioxide is a toxic gas with a pungent, irritating, and rotten smell and high dosages can cause damage to the respiratory system.
