A French boy scout who was wading in Skaftá glacial river in South Iceland yesterday had to be saved by the crew of a Coast Guard helicopter. The man became stuck on an islet in the river and members of Search and Rescue units could not reach him otherwise.

ICE-SAR's assistance was requested last night for a group of ten French boy scouts who had been wading in the river and had become stuck on two islets.

Nine of them could be reached by Search and Rescue members on the ground but the tenth had become separated from his companions and was stuck on another islet. Due to the strong current the decision was taken to call in the helicopter.

The mission tested nerves and body
According to local news site Vísir, the man was cold and wet when reached by the helicopter's crew. When he was saved, two hours had passed since the request for assistance was received.

A local ICE-SAR director told Vísir that the effort had tested the nerves and the body.
