All three Icelandic banks, Landsbankinn, Arion and Íslandsbanki, claim to be “the best bank in Iceland”, bolstering that claim with reference to international finance magazines. At the same time the overwhelming majority of Icelanders tell pollsters they have little or very little trust in the Icelandic banking system.
Everyone gets awards for being best
Kjarninn, a local news site, points out that with today’s announcement by Arion that the bank had been awarded the title “Bank of the Year” in Iceland by The Banker magazine, all three Icelandic banks can claim to be the best. Earlier Landsbankinn was awarded the best bank in Iceland, the second year in a row, by the Global Banking and Finance Magazine. Earlier this year Íslandsbanki has also been awarded the title “Best bank in Iceland” by the magazine Euromoney, third year in a row.
Only a small fraction of people trust the banking system
Kjarninn congratulates all three banks on being able to be “the best” in Iceland, but notes that to qualify for all three awards the banks had to apply for qualification. The local news site visir.is, which also covers this remarkable achievement of the three banks who are all “the best”, adds that while foreign banking magazines seem to be pretty impressed with the Icelandic banks their customers in Iceland are not as happy.
A poll by MMR which was released last week revealed that 70.6% of respondents said they had little trust in the banking system. Only 6.6% said they had a lot of trust in the banking system, which is the one institution of society which enjoys least trust, according to the poll.
