Traffic along the ring road in 2016 broke all previous records, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration reports. Traffic on the ring road increased by more than 13% compared to the year before, which is also the largest year-over-year traffic increase since measurements began.
Record increase in December
The IRCA reports that traffic grew particularly rapidly during the winter months, primarily due to growing tourism. December, for example, saw a 21% increase in traffic.
Traffic is measured at sixteen different spots along the ring road. All measuring points saw an increase in traffic, while the greatest increase took place in East Iceland, where traffic increased by a whopping 52%, compared to the year before. The traffic in Reykjavík increased by 18%.
The growth is chalked up to three different causes: Growing tourism, improved economic conditions and unusually favourable weather conditions during the winter, which has made travel easier.
