A record number of guests visited the magnificent Hengifoss waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park, Southeast Iceland, in 2015. According to the National Broadcasting Service, officials intend to better facilities in and around the tourist spot this year.
Plans are to build bigger sanitary facilities and expand the current parking lot, says Gunnþórunn Ingólfsdóttir, chairman of Fljótsdalshreppur district.

Hengifoss has a drop of 128 metres (420 ft), making it one of Iceland’s highest waterfalls. Over 44 thousand tourists visited the waterfall between 1. June and 26. November last year. It takes around 45 minutes to hike up to the waterfall, which is surrounded by basaltic strata, with red-coloured clay visible between the basaltic layers.
