Growth in traffic at Keflavík airport during January 2017, compared to the same time the year before, was a record breaking 70%. During the past month 494,000 people passed through the airport, compared to 290,000 in January 2016. The record shattering January comes on the heels of two other record months: December and November 2016 each saw a 55-56% year-over-year increase.

The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports that a major factor in the increase is the growth of WOW Air, which uses Keflavík as a stopover hub on its flights between North America and Europe. More airlines are also flying to Keflavík during the winter months.
In 2005 only two airlines flew to Keflavík year-round. This year eleven airlines fly to Keflavík all 12 months of the year. As a result of easier connections to more cities the number of travellers passing through the airport during the winter months has increased. RÚV notes that the number of passengers at Keflavík in January was greater than those passing through in July 2013, the busiest month of of that year.
