Record snowfall in December was measured in the capital yesterday, Wednesday, when 42 centimetres (16.5 inches) of snow was measured.

Meteorologist Einar Magnús Einarsson does not expect this record to stand long, as more snowfall is predicted in Reykjavík in the next couple of days.

The heavy snowfall has somewhat hampered daily life in the city – it made garbage collection difficult in Reykjavík’s Vesturbær area, as staff could not maneuver the wheelie bins due to snow drifts.

Yesterday, the National Broadcasting Service reported that it will take days for Reykjavík’s streets to be cleared of snow.
