American tourism in Iceland increased an impressive 37% in 2012. Recently, the US research firm Fluent conducted a study that revealed that Americans continued to flock to Iceland in 2013, as the tourism numbers increased an additional 49% this past year.
President of Fluent, Nellie Gregorian, attributes the increased American awareness of Iceland to the media coverage of the 2008 banking crisis as well as the increased Hollywood presence of Iceland and its amazing scenery. Films such as The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Oblivion as well as the popular TV show, Game of Thrones, have all been filmed in Iceland and have acted as advertisements for the beauty of this small European country. Americans didn´t even know Iceland existed on a map 15 years ago; however, Iceland´s thriving hub of culture and breathtaking scenery has appealed to a younger, more affluent group of Americans, which has resulted in the significant increase in American tourism over the past few years.
