The number of young puffins captured and registered in the Vestmannaeyjar islands this year has quadrupled compared to 2014.
According to the National Broadcasting Service 429 chicks were registered this year, compared to 99 in 2014 and 30 in 2013. The puffin population in the Vestmannaeyjar islands has drastically reduced in the past decade due to lack of food.

The chicks stay in their burrow until they are able to fly, then leaving to spend the next 3 to 5 years bobbing around at sea before returning to mate. Wayward chicks are captured by locals, registered and fed before being released again. The heaviest chick registered this year weighed 318 grams (11 ounces).
