Private car rental on the rise in Iceland. Bookings increased sevenfold between years 1701

Carrentals.is is an Icelandic private car rental service that lets people rent their private vehicles to others. According to the National Broadcasting Service, the practice is becoming increasingly popular and the service is more often than not a cheaper alternative to commercial car rentals.

Viktor Þórisson, Carrenter’s CEO, says bookings in January 2016 increased sevenfold compared to the same time period in 2015. However, the majority of bookings are during the tourist high season which stretches from June to August.

Private car rental can benefit both parties; car owners can make extra money renting out a car that might otherwise remain in little use and customers are offered a cheaper alternative to commercial car rentals.

Founded in 2013, Carrenters.is has grown considerably in the past year like other “sharing economy” businesses (companies and services which enable peer-to-peer exchanges through modern technology).

The process is simple, Viktor says, and according to Icelandic laws. All the cars are insured as car rentals during the rental period, although the renter’s self-risk is 250 thousand ISK (1,750 Euros/1,930 USD). A typical family car can be rented for about 10,000 ISK (70 Euros/77 USD) a day. The vehicles need to be in good shape and have passed an authorised inspection.

Over 100 cars are listed on Carrenters and, according to Viktor there is great demand for larger jeeps.
