Two prisoners have escaped from Kvíabryggja minimum security prison on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Western Iceland. According to the local newspaper DV, which broke the story this morning, the escaped prisoners are around twenty years old. Both were serving sentences for drug offences, and are not considered dangerous.

Páll Winkel, tells the local news service Vísir.is that the two are not considered dangerous, and that the police are currently searching for them. He adds that escapes from Kvíabryggja are extremely uncommon. The escape was discovered last night when the two did not show up to their cells at the correct time, after having been allowed to spend time outdoors. Prisoners at Kvíabryggja are allowed considerable freedom. Among other things, prisoners are allowed to have bicycles to ride around the prison grounds. No news yet whether bicycles were involved in the prison escape.

Kvíabryggja: Home to former Kaupþing managers

Among the notable prisoners at Kvíabryggja are the top managers of Kaupþing bank, Hreiðar Már Sigurðsson it‘s former CEO, Sigurður Einarsson it‘s former chairman and Magnús Guðmundsson the former chairman of Kaupþing Luxembourg, who are serving prison sentences of 4-5,5 years, and the principal investor in the bank, Ólafur Ólafsson who is serving a 4,5 year sentence, all for market manipulation. The three managers were recently sentenced again for a separate market manipulation case, along with four more former top managers at the bank.

Fellow prisoners at Kvíabryggja are reportedly frustrated at the luxury in which the jailed bankers have been able to live at the prison, having refurbished their cells and having catered meals delivered. Among the items causing frustration or envy was the fact that the Kaupþing bosses had fancier bicycles than other prisoners.
