Police determined yesterday that Sindri Þór Stefánsson, who escaped from a minimum security prison where he was being held as a suspect and material witness in the largest heist in Icelandic history, had managed to escape the country using a fake ID. Sindri boarded a plane at Keflavík Airport in the early hours headed for Stockholm.
Prime Minister traveled with suspect
The Prime Minister of Iceland, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, was among the passengers on the flight. Katrín was traveling to Stockholm where she is attending a meeting between the leaders of the Nordic countries and the Prime Minister of India. The National Broadcasting Service RÚV spoke to a passenger on the flight who said that nothing unusual took place, although the passenger noted that the Prime Minister was traveling Economy Class, rather than First Class.

Police has determined that Sindri escaped the minimum security prison at Sogn at around 1:00 am by squeezing through a window. Gunnar Ólafur Schram, Police superintendent with the Police in Suðurnes District told RÚV that Sindri most likely had accomplices helping him during the escape.
Police says suspect will be caught
Police authorities in Sweden have been contacted, and will help Icelandic Police apprehend the escaped suspect. Gunnar Ólafur told RÚV that he is optimistic the man will be caught.
I can say with certainty that we will catch him and get our hands in his hair. But when and where is another matter, and difficult to say with any certainty. It could be days or weeks. Perhaps years, but we will catch him.
