A powerful earthquake, 3.8 on the Richter scale, shook the Bárðarbunga volcano, located beneath the north-western part of the glacier at 7:30 this morning. The earthquake was followed by a swarm of smaller tremors. A second tremor, magnitude 2.9 took place in the volcano Hengill, just east of Reykjavík. According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RÚV this quake was felt in the town of Hveragerði in South Iceland.

Although the past few weeks have seen increasing activity in Bárðarbunga, which is the heart of Iceland's most powerful volcanic system, seismologists at the Icelandic Meteorological Office told RÚV there is nothing which points to increasing volcanic activity or an imminent eruption in Bárðarbunga. Since November 18 more than 20 major quakes have been detected in Bárðarbunga. The largest, magnitude 4.1, took place last week.
