Powerful 3.5 magnitude earthquake shakes town of Akureyri, North Iceland 5677

The town of Akureyri was shaken by a powerful 3.5 magnitude earthquake just before ten on Monday morning. The earthquake were clearly felt in Akureyri and nearby towns in Eyjafjörður fjord.

At 9:41 this morning a small 1.1 magnitude earthquake was detected by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, North of the town of Akureyri. The quake was felt in nearby villages, but a second more powerful 3.5 quake, which was detected at 9:44 was felt clearly all across the fjord. The epicentre of the more powerful earthquake was 12.5 km (7.8 miles) south of the town Grenivík, or roughly 16 km (9.5 miles) north of Akureyri.
