People who are planning to be traveling in South East of Iceland, including Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and the Eastfjords tonight, Friday October 26, or tomorrow, Saturday October 27, should revise their plans.
A Yellow Weather Alert is in effect for South East Iceland and the Eastfjords today late afternoon, at 17:00 (5 pm) until 6:00 tomorrow, Saturday. The Icelandic Meteorological Office is expecting Northerly gales, with sustained wind speeds of 13-20 m/s (29-45 mph), with localized winds and wind gusts reaching 35 m/s (78 mph). Winds of this magnitude can pose danger to vehicles which are susceptible to wind, like RVs, camper vans and travel trailers.
Take special care when driving close to steep mountains where localized winds and wind gusts are especially likely. ICE-SAR has also issued a travel warning on Safetravel.is:
Wind gusts over 35 m/s (80 mph, 130 km/h) expected tonight in eastern Iceland from Skaftafell to Vopnafjörður! Snow showers and limited visibility on mountain roads! Traveling in campers not recommended in the afternoon!
