Population of Iceland has now topped 350,000: Immigrants make up 11.3% of population 7989

We reached an important milestone in Icelandic history sometime during the first quarter of 2018: The population of Iceland has now topped 350,000, up from 340,110 since last year, an increase of 0.6%. The population has grown by 30,000 in the past six years, from 320,060 at the end of Q1 2012 to 350,710 at the end of March.

According to the latest population statistics from Statistics Iceland 64% of the total population (224,000 people) live in the greater Reykjavík area.

Immigration and re-migration
Most of the increase came from immigration. A total of 970 children were born in the 1st quarter and 600 persons died. Net migration was positive by 1,740 persons, primarily thanks to foreign nationals who moved to Iceland. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was positive by 20. Net migration among foreign citizens was positive by 1,720.

A total of 560 Icelandic citizens emigrated from Iceland during the first quarter. Most of these Icelanders emigrated to the other Nordic countries, 370 moved to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. At the same time 400 Icelandic citizens immigrated to Iceland from the other Nordic countries.The largest group of immigrants during the first quarter came from Poland, 770 out of the total 2,530 foreign citizens who immigrated, followed by Lithuania, 320. 

A total of 39,570 foreign nationals live in Iceland, according to Statistics Iceland, 11.3% of the total population.
