Population boom in the village Vík in S. Iceland, thanks to tourism 4767

The small town of Vík in South Iceland is experiencing a population boom, the latest population figures from Statistics Iceland reveal. During December 2017 2017 to September 1 2018, the population of the municipality of Mýrdalshreppur, which includes Vík and the surrounding rural areas, grew by 9.1%. No other municipality in Iceland registered a similar growth.

The population of Mýrdalshreppur was 683 on September 1, compared to 626 on the first of December, 2017. 

The village of Vík has benefited handsomely from the growth in tourism in recent years. The area around Vík is renowned for its beauty. Thousands visit the black sand beaches around Dyrhólaey peninsula, to the west of Vík. Vík is also a popular stop for travelers heading further east to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Vatnajökull National Park.
