Icelandic designer Þórunn Árnadóttir recently found out that her design has been copied and is currently seeking funding through the website Kickstarter – the same place Þórunn used to fund her original design, The Pyro Pet Cat Candle, in 2013.

Þórunn and Dan Koval designed the Cat Candle some years ago while studying at the Royal College of Art in London. The candle is shaped like a cute kitten, but as the wax melts away, an eerie metal skeleton is revealed underneath the pleasant exterior. The candle comes in two colours, grey and pink, and has a burning time of around twenty hours. Ten thousand candles have already been sold world-wide.

According to Fréttablaðið newspaper, a customer contacted Þórunn and told her about the copy-cat. The imitations are called Gummy Bear Skeleton Candles and the only difference is that these figures are shaped like gummy bears instead of cats.

“What strikes me as strange is Kickstarter allowing this individual to seek funding through their website,” Þórunn concludes.
