Polls: Ólafur Ragnar holds commanding lead for presidential election, more challengers drop out 4526

According to a poll by polling firm MMR released yesterday Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson holds a commanding lead over his challengers. The poll shows 52.6% of voters support Ólafur. Author and environmental activist Andri Snær Magnason, who is the closest challenger enjoys the support of 29.4% of voters. Entrepreneur Halla Tómasdóttir polls at 8.8% and other candidates at less than 2%. Prior to the release of the poll yesterday, Hrannar Pétursson dropped out of the race, arguing the decision of Ólafur Ragnar to seek re-election, after having previously vowed to step down, had completely changed the race.

Looking at the poll more closely reveals that Ólafur enjoys more support among older and less educated voters, as well as voters with lower incomes and those living outside the capital region. Ólafur Ragnar enjoys the support of 73.5% of voters who have only finished primary education, but only 34.4% of voters who have a college degree. Only 9.3% of voters with only a primary education support Andri Snær, but 45.2% of those with a college degree.

Earlier in the day, prior to the release of the poll, one more presidential hopeful withdrew his candidacy. At a meeting with several presidential candidates at the University of Reykjavík Hrannar Pétursson declared that Ólafur Ragnar‘s decision to run for re-election had changed the nature of the race completely. Hrannar told the local TV station Stöð 2 that his chances had been dramatically reduced with Ólafur in the race. He refused to endorse any of the remaining eleven candidates
