A smaller search today
The Police Chief Superintendent for South Iceland told the local news site Vísir that the search yesterday failed to turn up any concrete evidence:
We are still searching for clues and pursuing those leads we found yesterday evening, and we will continue this today.
Vísir reports that the search and rescue operation will be scaled down today, as hope of finding the man alive dwindles and the search becomes more focused. As many as 150 people participated in the search yesterday. Today the number of rescuers will be between 50 and 60. Nets will be stretched across the river downstream from the waterfall to catch anything which might float downstream from the site where the man was last seen.
Man was travelling alone
The man appears to have been travelling alone, as none of the other visitors at Gullfoss which the police interviewed could identify the man. Nobody has come forward to identify the man, and no reports of missing people have been filed with the police.
A search of the cars and tour buses at the site then allowed the Police to identify one car which is believed to be connected to the man. This vehicle is currently the focus of the investigation. Police has been able to identify the owner of the automobile and is currently interviewing people who have connections to the owner. According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service the Police believes it knows the identity of the man, although Police has yet to make confirm his identity.
The man was last seen in the river above the upper terrace of the waterfall, and then again in the water between the two terraces of the waterfall.
